Step-by-Step Silage Making Process (The 7 Critical Stages)
1. Harvesting at the Milk-Line (Dough) Stage (दुधिया दाना अवस्था)
Harvest green maize when the grain has reached the 50% milk-line stage (half milky, half hard). At this point, plant moisture is ideally 65%–68% with maximum soluble sugars for fermentation.
2. Precision Chopping (12 mm to 18 mm Particle Size)
Chop the whole plant (stalk, leaves, and cob) using a mechanized chaff cutter to 1.5 cm – 2.0 cm. Finer chopping allows tighter compaction and releases fermentable plant sugars.
3. Silage Inoculant / Biological Culture Application
Mix a quality microbial silage inoculant (Lactobacillus plantarum and L. buchneri) or add 1% jaggery (गुड़) + 0.5% mineral salt solution per ton to accelerate beneficial lactic acid production.
4. Airtight Compaction (बंकर या बैग में दबाई)
In a pit, bunker, or high-density silage bag, compact the chopped fodder in 15 cm layers using tractor tyres or mechanical presses. Oxygen is the enemy of silage — eliminate all air pockets.
5. Hermetic Sealing (UV-Stabilized Polyethylene Sheet)
Seal the pit with a 200-micron UV-protected sheet and weigh it down with sandbags or earth.
6. Fermentation Phase (45 to 60 Days)
Under anaerobic conditions, lactic acid bacteria convert sugars into lactic acid, dropping pH to 3.8–4.2, perfectly pickling the fodder.
7. Opening and Feeding
After 45 days, open only one vertical face of the bunker daily. Well-fermented silage has a pleasant, sweet-fruity aroma and bright yellow-green color with zero black fungal mold.
